This blog post is intended to provide guidance in building great dashboards that will be used in the long term within an organisation. It is based on our experience of building dashboards with our partners over several years, so we now have a good understanding of what works well and what doesn’t.
In my last blog post I wrote about how the adoption of self-service BI tools hasn’t lived up to its promise of giving users easy access to the data they need.
As I also pointed out, organisations often make the mistake of looking for a “one size fits all” solution. The tools that business users need will be simpler in their design and their approach than those for data analysts. Business users need timely, easy to access information that relates to their role and how they are measured. Data analysts are focused on delving deep into data in order to discover patterns, trends and help to forecast the future for the organisation.
As the BI market matures, I often get asked what is my view of the data visualisation market? Dashboard’s creation tools first became established 7-8 years ago. Their prime role was to make life easier for IT staff and data analysts who were becoming overloaded with requests for more and more data as organisations became more data aware. In fact, many vendors basic value proposition was about empowering business users to self-serve without the need for an IT department.
I have seen many organisations struggle with this and wondered when people would get beyond the hype of the marketing message. In my view, the adoption of these tools hasn’t lived up to their promise of giving users easy access to the data they need.
Purpose Software has announced the immediate availability of a new dashboard option for its CBS and 2serv service management solutions. This new capability will help resellers to improve individual, team and organisational performance whilst enhancing decision-making across the business.
The dashboards provide browser-based access to a consolidated view of organisational performance, highlighting metrics and KPIs that matter the most, from existing, disparate data sources. Dashboards can be customised to meet the functional requirements of individual users who can ‘drill down’ for more detailed analysis all the way to individual customer record, document or device levels.
According to Purpose Software: “This new dashboard add-on is intuitive, easy-to-use, highly configurable and can be implemented in hours rather than months. It demonstrates our ongoing commitment to developing all our business management software, which comprises the market’s widest range of products, maintaining our position as the UK’s leading provider of data integration solutions to print and managed services resellers.”
Intuitive Business Intelligence has launched Intuitive 4 – a major new release of its well-established BI visualisation solution.
The new release was previewed at the recent Intuitive Partner conference at the Olympic Park in London and has received great feedback from partners.
As Chris Thompson MD of ProcessFlows comments
“We have already upgraded our own version of the software, and have found the productivity gains in terms of dashboard design and improved flexibility very appealing”
Key features of the new release include:
From a technical perspective Intuitive 4 has moved the dashboard designer and component builder into HTML5 which has allowed for greater flexibility in design and management.
